Exploring the 2026 Death Valley Superbloom at Ashford Mill

I just finished editing images of a the 2026 Death Valley Superbloom. This set is from the Ashford Mill location.

Ashford Mill

In February and early March I went to Death Valley to photograph the best wildflower display since 2016. About once a decade the rains are sufficient for the hills and valleys to come aglow with flowers.

The Ashford Mill site has ruins of an old gold mines. It’s interesting but not that photographic. On one side of the road the hills are covered with Desert Gold flowers in the sunflower family.

The other side of the highway is sandy in nature where pink Sand Verbena puts on a display.

Sand Verbena

The sandy areas of Death Valley are often covered with pink Sand Verbena.

Sand Verbena is one of the first flowers to bloom. This location was very much past peak by March.

Wind is a huge problem in these scenes. For most of the 5 days I spent in the park wind was not a problem.

Most of my images were in the first or last hour of the day. People were camping in there cars at the Ashford Mill spot.
