Sunrise Glow at the Cholla Garden, Joshua Tree National Park

The cholla garden in Joshua Tree is the best spot in the park to see a glorious sunrise.

Cholla Garden Sunrise

The cholla garden is the best spot for a a sunrise in the park. More specifically, one needs arrive no later than 30 minutes before sunrise.

Of the four images on this page, the first three were taken before sunrise.

For about 45 minutes the backlight makes the chollas glow.

There is a loop path through the garden.

If you go with kids, make sure they stay on the trail. Don’t touch and don’t kneel down.

Chollas are very nasty with barbs. You will need tweezers or a pair of needle-nose pliers to get them out if you accidentally touch one. And don’t step on them either. They may go through your shoes.

The fourth image is just after sunrise. I captured a starbust effect of the sun rising behind the branches of a cholla.
