What Is Birefringence?

ScienceDirect Explains Birefringence:
“Birefringence, also known as double refraction. It’s is an optical property in which a single ray of unpolarized light splits into multiple rays in different directions.”
The appearance is similar to that of a rainbow.
The patterns are not visible to the naked eye. And you need a polarizer on your camera and a tripod. To bring out the details, I blended as many as 10 or more images for each shot.
All of these images were taken with an EOS R5 with a 100-400 mm lens, many at 400 mm.
Enjoy!

I love the delicate and very fragile patterns of this image but the rocks are not the prettiest.

I struggled for a long time with this image. I wanted to get this pattern but without the reed. But removing the reed would have broken the ice.
Instead, I decided to isolate the reed making it a part of the image.

#7
I pondered this image as the lead. I love the beautiful, soft, pastel colors.

This image and the above image are nearly the same spot. Shifting inches can dramatically change the colors.

Nature is amazing. I am pleased to present these examples.
The first, 6th, 7th, and 11th were my four favorites.

These are fantastic pictures – I like the rocks . My favorites are 2,10 & 11.
Birefringence…the word of the day. Learning something new.
I’ll go with 2, 7, and 10.
#11 is tops with me
9, 10,& 11. You are an artist Mish. Plus I read your posts about the economy, DOGE, and USAID etc. daily. I have followed you for??? 25 years.
Bire… is a 25 dollar word. Love it. Woodworkers have a great word too:
Chatoyance. How light dances in a finish to reveal the color brilliance inside a piece of wood.
Thanks for all you do. Be well.
Thanks forcommenting on Chatoyance and following me all these years
#s 4, 7, and 10 are my favorites, but honestly, they’re all beautiful. I agree with your decision to make the reed part of that particular picture. So interesting! Wonderful job on all of them and great, minimalist commentary on this body of work. Thanks for the post.
Nice education on double refraction and use of polarizer, now I get to experiment. Physics rules! My favorite is #3 because of the composition and also #11. Beautiful art!
These are amazing images. Thanks for bringing the beauty of nature to our view. Thanks so much. JLB
