Explore the Yellow House Ruin: A Hidden Gem in Bears Ears

This is the sixth in a series of incredible archaeological structures in Southern Utah. It’s in in the Bears Ears National Monument cultural landscape.

These images are from a trip to the Blanding and Bluff areas of Southeast Utah.

The BLM does not require a special permit to visit this location, but you do need a monument pass.

Directions

From Blanding: Head south on US-191 for 4 miles, turn west on UT-95, toward Natural Bridges National Monument, and after another 14 miles turn left, or south, onto Country Road 235, the Comb Wash Road.

After passing through the Comb Wash Campsite, go another couple miles to where a road branches off on the left and there is room for one or two vehicles to park.

Please see Ghikes Yellow Rock Ruin for more details.

You are looking for the Sheiks Canyon Trailhead.

The main ruin is in pristine shape. The roof is intact and that is 700-year old minimum yucca twine holding the ruin together.

It’s a short hike, less than a mile round trip, to this ruin. Hiking past the Yellow House Ruin is a scramble better suited for more experienced hikers.

I intend to go back. There is much more to see further up the canyon but time did not permit further exploration.

I have more locations in Bears Ears but those were my favorites. I am going to move on to some Autumn Images near where I live.

Autumn in St. George was very late this year. My favorite images were from November and some from December.

  1. Beautiful, dream-like images, Mish. I like the light colors. In the fourth image, it looks like cupules have been carved into the wall (lower left). The material lashing the logs together in the first image looks interesting. So cool how the lines of the roof branches mimic the sandstone cross beds.
