Explore Two of the Best Overlooks at Cedar Breaks

The North View Overlook and Point Supreme are easy walks to two of the best park overlooks.

Behind the Shot

My favorite overlook in the park is North View.

These are images in my file from this time of year a couple years ago after a dusting of snow. Winter comes early to Cedar Breaks at elevations over 10,000 feet.

In the above image, the alpenglow brings out subtle shades of pinks and orange that one does not see in full sun.

At Cedar Breaks, the best shots are often about 15 minutes after the sun has set.

Compare the details in the next two shots. One is taken in the golden hour before the sun has set and the second shot is about 15 minutes later.

Golden Hour North Point Overloook

North Point Overlook Alpenglow After Sunset

The preceding two shots are from nearly the same position, one before sunset and one after.

It looks like there is sun in the above shot but its afterglow from the setting sun, often strong at high elevations.

Subtle colors, especially pinks are the reward for sticking around after sunset.

Here is another golden hour shot.

Point Supreme

Point Supreme is at the visitor center. It’s a short walk to the overlook.

Those looking for a nice hike should explore the Alpine Lakes trail for summer wildflowers or the Spectra Point Trail from the visitor center to ancient bristlecone pines.
