Spring Garden Highlights: Flowers and Tips for April and May

This is what our front garden looks like in the Spring, April and May

The pink flowers are ice plants. We also have yellow roses, a red tree rose, perky sues (darker yellow), day lilies, golden barrel cacti, and a pair of giant saguaros.

The first two images are from this year. The second pair is from last year.

Those giant saguaros are 50-70 years old or so. They may develop arms in another 50 years or so.

Saguaros are marginally hardy here. When the temperature dropped to 17 degrees in January this year, I had them covered in burlap. They are about 5 feet tall.

Last year the tree rose bloomed heavily with the ice plants. This year, the tree rose looks like it may pop in a week or so. The ice plants have really spread in the last year.

Our redbud tree bloomed heavily this year. I designed our landscaping.

  1. Very nice. We live in Alpine. We can’t grow many of the plants you folks can further south.

  2. Nice landscaping for southern Utah. I bet gardening is a bit different than Chicagoland. Great vista from your modern style house.

  3. Beautiful garden! I thought you were in Illinois? Doesn’t look like it!
