Great Basin National Park in Nevada offers some nice high-altitude hikes. The Alpine Lakes trail is one of my favorites.

Hiking Buddies
I went on this trip with Fred and Sue Birnbaum at the Explorumentary Blog. We first hiked to a bristlecone pine area then to Stella Lake and barely made it to Stella Lake for sunset.
I will go over bristlecone pines next. It’s a separate hike.

Mish, it was really fun and educational to go on this photo shoot with you. Looking forward to future photo expeditions! It was really special to see that gorgeous sunset, and how the light and color and textures came together – something that many people don’t get to experience. Now I will remember to use low ISO to smooth out the water!

It’s not always easy. It’s a case of checking results. You can smooth the water but it also makes the reflection more blurry. So it’s a tradeoff of finding the right shutter speed to smooth the water that leaves the reflection intact. I took many images and then selected the one that worked out the best. Fortunately most of the ripples were closer to shore. That helped a lot. For this shot ~1 second worked nicely. Some of this is trial and error on top of educated guesses.
