Four Trolls – Devils’ Garden – Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

Devil’s Garden is located in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It’s about 18 miles from Escalante, Utah down Hole-in-the-Rock road.

The road is unpaved with deadpan washboard, but any car is suitatable. The garden features two arches, these trolls and other interesting rock formations.

This is an easy shot with a normal lens. The only key is to be there right at sunrise. The light before sunrise is nice but that shot was taken shortly after sunrise as the rising sun hit the trolls but not the base they are standing on.

Light goes flat fast in the morning so the real key is to not be late. It is only a 5 minute walk from the parking lot to some very interesting formations.

The shot also works at sunset, from the other side, but there are trees and shrubs partially in the way that makes sunrise a better angle.
