Cape Royal: A Sunrise Paradise at Grand Canyon

Cape Royal is my favorite spot on the North Rim. It’s especially photogenic at sunrise and sunset. These are morning images.

Feature Image Details

Cape Royal

It’s an easy, wheelchair-accessible hike of about 0.8 miles roundtrip to Cape Royal from the parking lot.

There are immense views to the East, West, and South covering over 200 degrees depending on where you stand. And there is a picnic area near the parking lot.

The road to the parking lot is nearly 20 winding miles. There are numerous overlooks along the way, the main one being Point Imperial.

Factor in 20 minutes to get from the lodge to the turnoff so if you want to be there at sunrise, you need to be up very early.

Wotan’s Throne

The image of Wotan’s Throne and the sunburst are about two minutes apart from the same location, facing East first, then West at 7:06 AM then 7:08 AM shortly after sunrise on August 10.

The sun peaking through those clouds cast a warm morning glow.
